Santa Margherita di Tosina
SANTA MARGHERITA DI TOSINA - FLORENCE
home history apartments where we are itineraries contacts

The name Tosina is orginally Etruscan, so we presume that this place was inhabited during this period and it was probably built along an antique road starting from the Val di Sieve passing through Casentino reaching Monte Falterona (where the River Arno begins) which was the sacred mountain of the Etruscan population. The Etruscans were followed by the Romans and then the Longobards.

The first evidence that we have of the Church of Santa Margherita di Tosina dates back to 1038 where it is believed that as early on as the 11th Century, religious groups were already established there. More certain evidence tells us that in 1186 the wealthy family “Da Quona” donated the priory of Santa Margherita to the Monastery of Camaldoli.

Essentially a resting place for travellers passing along this inaccessible route from Florence to Casentino, including famous personalities amongst whom Dante who followed behind the Florentine military before the battle of Campaldino and San Francesco who according to research was living nearby Pomino.

The cloister dates back to 1466 as inscribed on the entrance door and then subsequently other works were carried out such as the 16th Century well, being careful not to interfere with the character of the building.

Up until the 19th Century Tosina was used to house religious groups but then with the suppression of the Napoleon era it then passed from being owned by the church into the hand of private owners. The actual proprietors are ancestors to a gentleman who fell in love with the place when walking one Spring morning with a dear friend, Ruggero Panerai a farmous painter. He bought the cloister in 1899.
